Heartburn and Indigestion

If you have heartburn, you have likely been told to take antacids. However, this method, though helping the symptoms, will likely aggravate your problem and cause other issues. Did you know that heartburn, indigestion, diarrhea and constipation are usually caused by a lack of stomach acid? It seems counter-intuitive that a lack of stomach acid could cause heartburn, until you understand how the stomach works. When too little acid is produced (because of stress, poor diet, vitamin/mineral deficiencies, etc.) food sits in the stomach longer than it should because the acid is necessary for digestion. When the food sits in the stomach, it putrifies, causing it to produce acids which can bubble back up the esophagus. This causes the burning that you may be experiencing. Often, however, it causes problems on the other end, such as diarrhea or constipation, from slow transit of food through the digestive tract.

Solution: Add some (preferrably organic) apple cider vinegar (ACV) to your meals. Approximately 2T (tablespoons) in a small amount of water should do the trick. If you can’t stomach the taste, try some betaine hydrochloride capsules. You can purchase these online.I also try to keep a few bottles in my office. Also, try to drink your liquids either 15 minutes before or at least a half hour after meals, as liquids dilute your stomach acid. Heartburn and indigestion can be cured, without having to rely on antacids, which only make the problem worse. B-vitamins and Omega-3 fatty acids (fish oil) are necessary for making adequate stomach acid and, ironically, these two nutrients aren’t adequately absorbed without sufficient stomach acid. If you take additional acids, you will then be able to absorb these nutrients again, enabling you to make your own adequate amounts of stomach acid in the future and thus absorb your nutrients again, versus taking an antacid each time you eat, which CAUSES you to not absorb your nutrients, making the problem WORSE. Betaine hydrochloride is a supplement that you can take if you don’t like the taste of the apple cider vinegar. It is available through Amazon.com or Vitacost, as well as other sites online or through some local drugstores.
