Autophagy

If you’ve never heard the word “autophagy” you’re going to be pleasantly surprised! Autophagy literally means “eat yourself”. That’s not so pleasant, but what is is the following video about a scientist named Yoshinori Ohsumi, a Japanese researcher who discovered autophagy and received the Nobel Prize for his work with such.

What I first heard of autophagy was a true story about a vacation disaster! The owner asked the neighbor to look after the family dog while on vacation for seven days. The neighbor forgot! When the dog owner returned home, he was furious that his dog had been neglected the whole time their family was on vacation. However, the good that came out of this story is this: The dog had had a large tumor on his neck when the family left for vacation. After 7 days, the dog’s body had consumed that tumor. It was gone! The dog was fine. Does this give anyone else hope for cancer treatment?!
